The availability, affordability and ease of use of PDAs have opened new opportunities for medical professionals so that they are no longer tied to brick and mortar offices or hospitals. Now treating patients from any location is possible and better record keeping is possible. There are a variety of software programs available for PDAs which can be synched with desktop computers and the Internet for updates so that you always stay current with new trends and treatments in the medical field.

1. Patient Tracker

Available for both Palm OS and Windows CE devices, this software provides medical personnel with the ability to keep up-to-date patient information no matter where you have to travel. Now you don't have to carry paper files and risk damage or loss to those important documents. It can be synched wirelessly with desktops when Patient Tracker Desktop is used.

2. Mobipocket - Medical Ebooks

A large variety of medical books which can be downloaded to your PDA for quick reference or research while traveling. There are ebooks for just about any medical professional including reference, emergency, medical dictionaries and disease and drug resources.

3. Archimedes™ - Free Medical Calculator

Archimedes Medical Calculator which can be used with ease to calculate formulas and includes specialties such as Pediatrics, Cardiology and more. The nicest feature of this software is that it is free. This program can also be cross-referenced with other software programs from Skyscape for even more functionality.

4. mMD.Net Charts

This software can be used on Pocket PC, Palm and SmartPhones. It includes a wide variety of templates for gathering patient information, ensuring that the documentation is legible and complies with billing procedures. Records included are: clinical notes, lab/test reports, problem list, meds list, immunization history, allergies, vitals, family and social histories, directives and vitals.

5. 5-Minute Pediatric Consult for PDA

This is reference software for use with PDAs and provides medical professionals with advice for infants, children, and teen problems. This software can be updated when the handheld is synched with a desktop. There are a variety of indexes available to search through from selecting a symptom to finding what treatment options are available and what follow-up care should be taken.

6. Adobe Reader for Pocket PC 2.0

Be able to read Adobe PDF files, data entry for editing files, wireless printing to remote printers and slide show viewing. Slide show viewing are created using Adobe Photoshop Album software. This software is free and provides a valuable tool for mobile medical professionals.

7. The Merck Manual, 18th Ed. / Professional

The Merck Manual is useful to all medical professionals especially those that work in a mobile environment. This software requires Pocket PC 2002 or later and is supported by Windows Mobile 5.0. The Merck Manual can be updated in order for mobile medical professionals to stay on top of new developments.

This software can be used to create lists and organize information in any manner that makes sense to you. ListPro Professional Edition can be used on both a desktop and handheld device to make it easy to keep all your files synched with each other. This is a well-rounded program that can be customized to suit your needs and work-style.

9. MD on TAP

This is a program which enables wireless access to MEDLINE® citations and can be used with Palm, Pocket PC and SmartPhones which have a minimum display of 240W x 320H. Citations can be saved in text format on the handheld and there are links to full-text web sites included in the citations. There are 3 search engines which can be utilized and it also has Auto Spell Check.

10. Mosby's PDA Dictionary

This software includes terms for nursing, medicine and health-care related topics. It is available in a Palm OS format and for Pocket PCs. It can also be cross-referenced with other Skyscape programs for improved functionality. This program also includes a built-in calculator.
