Ultraportable Laptops

By Catherine Roseberry, About.com

Travel Friendly Features:

  • Ultraportable laptops are easy to travel with and use in any type of space.
  • Reduced weight and size. Ultraportable laptops have smaller displays, smaller hard drives, smaller keyboards, and the exclusion of integrated optical drives.
  • Smaller display can also be a benefit for keeping what you are working on more private because it's more difficult for someone to see what you're working on with a smaller display.
Potential Frustration Points:

  • The display is normally 12 to 13 inches, and if you will be using your laptop frequently, this size of display may be tiring (and frustrating when you have to scroll down and across to read documents or view web sites).
  • The learning curve. Adjusting to smaller keyboards may also involve a learning curve, especially if you have larger hands and tend to get frustrated easily using smaller keys.
  • ]Higher price. Ultraportable laptops are at the higher end price-wise. Believe it or not, you will pay more for the ability to work with a smaller laptop.
